Updates from July 2021 Trip to Honduras

School Campus now housing village of La Reina

School Campus now housing village of La Reina

From Founding Director Maggie Ducayet:

My trip to Honduras (the first in 18 months) was quite a trip, filled with the shocking reality of all the damage from the two back-to-back hurricanes as well as COVID which has ravaged the country. Only 10% are vaccinated but they are vigilant about wearing masks.  Life has been forever changed for many of the families we support. I spent time in the villages, and time with Rotary in Santa Barbara. I visited the Maternity clinic we support, and the school campus we built at the end of 2019 in Valle Verde.

We visited La Reina, above Valle Verde, where the side of a mountain literally washed away, taking an entire village with it.  The villagers have been living in our school campus ever since, at one time more than 100 of them. The government is building new housing and we hope to be able to open school again in late fall, after needed repairs to the school campus.

One of the amazing examples of self-sufficiency is our Chicken Coop project. The first one is up and running in El Cedral and it is incredible. They have over 50 chickens and they are producing enough eggs for the entire village, are giving eggs to some of the poorer villages nearby and selling the rest. Our second Chicken Coop project is just weeks away from being completed, and we’ve identified more villages to follow.

We’re starting a number of water projects with Rotary in Santa Barbara, and putting a plan together for a major renovation of the maternity clinic.
