OTHER PROJECTS & PROGRAMS
Celebrating with students from technical school in Santa Barbara and Summit County High School
Amigos de Jesus
Amigos de Jesus is a safe haven for children. The campus includes their homes, school, church, and family. Amigos de Jesus is now home to over 100 children and hopes to reach a capacity of 180. We first visited this beautiful community in 2013 and have participated in many projects. The medical team goes every year and performs well child checkups for all the children as well as physicals for the staff. The fire fighters also visit the school and provide safety training with the children and staff. Learn more about Amigos de Jesus here.
Summit County High School trips
We have taken high school students for a week long cultural experience every year since 2012. The students have raised the money for their trips as well as raising funds for the project they will participate in while visiting Honduras. Students have come from Summit High School and The Peak School.
Eco Stoves
In 2018 we began our “smoke free” stove project by building a prototype in the village of El Cedral. The villagers embraced this new technology which has proven to be a much healthier alternative to what they had been using. Our initial goal is to have a stove in every home in El Cedral.
Fire Fighters
The Red White and Blue Fire Protection District in Breckenridge made their first trip to Honduras in 2016. Since then fire fighting partners from other Colorado communities have joined us. The Fire Fighters have worked with and supported the “bomberos” in Santa Barbara and La Entrada in Honduras. They have participated in first aid training with the Manos Amigas Clinic, as well as first aid and fire safety training with the Amigos de Jesus Home for Children.
Ambulances
Summit in Honduras purchased a Land Rover in 2014 which was converted to an Ambulance for the Municipality of Florida. In 2019 Red, White and Blue donated a retired Ambulance which was transferred to the Manos Amigas Clinic in Honduras. Both are being actively used.
In 2021 we will ship a second retired Ambulance donated by Red, White and Blue to the “bomberos” in Santa Barbara to replace a 25 year old Suburban retrofitted to use as an ambulance.
Rotary Projects
Summit in Honduras partners with The Summit County Rotary, The Breckenridge Rotary and the Rotary of Santa Barbara, Honduras. Projects include the rehabilitation of schools and school desks, the building of school latrines and projects with the local technical school. The Santa Barbara Rotary members often host the high school students while on Honduras trips.
In 2021 we have agreed to fund a number of Rotary water projects in the area of Santa Barbara. These projects will rebuild existing systems destroyed in the two 2020 hurricanes and the communities will again have clean water.
Maternity Clinic
The Maternity Clinic in La Entrada supports women who come from remote villages to give birth. They usually arrive at the clinic a week or two before their due date. Often they arrive with only the clothes on their back and nothing for their babies. They are also expected to bring their own food. Summit in Honduras has been supporting them for the last three years with food and baby supplies. We bought them a stove and refrigerator for their kitchen as well as a doppler ultrasound machine.
Food Support Program
In 2020 Summit in Honduras started a food distribution program due to the coronavirus lockdown in Honduras. Many of the remote villages we work with were not able to bring their coffee crops to market. With the lockdown all transportation was also closed. While the food distribution program is winding down, we have replaced it with a Chicken Coop program. We have started building Chicken Coops in the villages and supplying them so that the villages have a sustainable source of protein.
Water Projects
Summit in Honduras supports clean water projects, either through funding a clean water project in a village, or providing a shorter term solution with water pots from Potters for Peace. With recent flooding due to the hurricanes we provided 150 pots from Potters for Peace to be shared within the families in the villages.
